The advice I would give to my younger self

We are as young as we could be. We always had this idea of a perfect beginning, the journey that would speak for itself. Somewhere on this journey, something falls short; the unexpectedness takes over and our plans either fail, come to a haul or we experience a time when we failed ourselves in the process.

The good and the bad part is; even when we can't change what happened with us, we do have some say in how we want our lives to unfold (of course we still can't control what would happen, but our experiences could teach us so much).

I've always wanted to pen this down and see if I could ever go back to my early teens and early 20s, I would rather give this advice to myself -

  1. The earlier you learn about disappointments, the better: Well none of us is immune to the curve balls that life throws at us. We lose loved ones, friends, and parts of our lives that we could probably never bring back. When I learnt that disappointment is an on-going thing, I knew how to brace myself better.

  2. You will not be everyone's go-to or favourite person: I liked being both, or at least the idea of being everyone's #1. But it all comes down to the effort we are willing to put in. Sometimes it just doesn't work and you wouldn't have an audience of supporters. But if you have you by your side, that can be enough.

  3. You'll go through major ups and downs and still be ok: We all feel others live 'the perfect life' but in reality, we all have our flawed, broken and beautiful versions that we tend to conceal from the world. It's not a linear life for sure, it's a roller coaster that makes the ride worth it even when it seems to be not.

I have lots to say to my younger self, but I'd leave this here for now. The most important thing I've learnt is that with years, you understand the true meaning of strength and it comes from everything I mentioned above. It's about going through the chaos and still finding a place where you feel at peace.

Learn to sail in the highs and the lows, but also remember to never lose that hope that whatever tomorrow brings, it will always be better. And if it isn't, someday it will be.

What would you add to this?
